That we may not be lost...
To be lost is a frightening experience, like a child losing a parent in a big shop. Maybe losing direction in marriage or a job, losing health, good looks, life itself.
When we are lost we need a signpost, or some way of finding direction. Jesus is our way, our direction, our signpost through life to God.
He is lifted up; so that in every dangerous experiences of life, we can see him, our risen Lord on Calvary.
In illness or depression, we know his presence. In poverty and injustice, we know his care. In mourning and loss, we know his compassion. In our efforts to ease the pain of others, we know he is with us.
He is lifted up, never out of our sight, for God gave his only Son so that we might not be lost, but have eternal life.
