Reflection for 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Some things last in life:

like love and compassion, memory of kindnesses, big and small, moments of love, friendship remembered and relived even when people have passed on. And the Word of God lasts, even though the heavens and earth the weather and the winds, the crops and the plants change each day and season.

The pictures and signs Jesus uses are frightening: stars falling and the moon darkening, the sun going cold and dark. Yes, we fear the upheaval of the earth, and we fear the signs that Jesus mentions: but these are not to be frightening signs, just signs that God is near. Everything we see and experience, turbulent and calm, joyful and sad, can be to the eye of faith, a sign of the nearness of God.
